What is dance/movement therapy?
According to the Indian Association of Dance/Movment Therapy, DMT is psychotherapeutic practice that employs body movement and creative expression to further socio-emotional, cognitive, and somatic integration.
Therapeutic use of body movement
A DMT practitioner uses a combination of organised and unorganised movement activities, like expressive movement, choreography, improvisation, free and organised dance forms, visual interaction, and other creative expressions of preference to open the door to therapeutic healing goals.
Creative and tailored
DMT, essentially at the core of it, is a practice that is based on the individual needs and requirements of the person seeking it. Since DMT offers a plethora of tools and techniques to work with, DMT professionals use a blend of these to create a tailor-made approach for the person and challenge in question.
Communication and expression
DMT is a safe non-verbal avenue for individuals who prefer therapy without having to talk. DMT encourages individuals to communicate, express emotions, interact and develop an emotional-awareness without any use of language or necessary vocalisation. Talking and holding a conversation, however, are always welcome and encouraged.
Holistic healing approach
DMT works on the very foundation that mind, body and spirit are interconnected and constitute the basis of emotional health. Overall well-being, in a DMT session, is achieved by combining techniques and creating a customised strategy for the specific individual or group of individuals.
Therapeutic relationship at the center
DMT sessions are designed to build reliability, transparency and compassion in the therapist-individual relationship. Diagnosing, defining and prioritising challenges can be efficiently achieved through positive rapport between therapist and client. Facilitation of growth and change is highly dependent on this relationship.
Numerous Applications
DMT can be recommended and used in various situations to address a multitude of challenges and needs including physical rehabilitation, mental health challenges, emotional grounding and educational environments, creative challenges, team building activities and more.
